Risk Assessment

Explain why it is important to assess health and safety risks posed by the work setting, situations or by particular activities

This page is designed to answer the following questions:

Risk assessment is a very important duty in the workplace, in fact it is your employer’s legal duty to ensure that risk assessments are carried out for all potential health and safety risks.

By assessing health and safety risks posed by particular work settings, situations or activities you can:

  • identify what the risks are
  • identify who may be harmed
  • evaluate the risk (how likely and severe is it?)
  • identify ways of reducing the risk or removing the risk completely
  • record the findings so that everyone knows how to handle the setting, situation or activity safely

As stated above, assessing risks is not only a legal requirement but also essential to protecting yourself and others from preventable harm.

It is important to assess health and safety risks to prevent or minimise hazards that could potentially cause illness or injury. This protects all individuals from harm as much as is reasonably possible.

In addition, health and safety risks must be assessed to comply with legislation and company policies and procedures.
