To ensure the safety of yourself and others, it is important that you do not perform certain tasks until you have received sufficient training and are able to carry them out competently.
Some typical tasks related to moving and assisting that you should be able to demonstrate competency in before performing are:
- Using lifting/moving equipment (e.g. assisted beds, hoists, trucks etc.)
- Transference of individuals (e.g. from a bed to a chair)
- Personal care tasks (e.g. toileting, bathing)
When performing these tasks you should always follow your employer’s agreed ways of working.
Attempting to carry out a task that you are not competent in, particularly when it involves moving/assisting another individual can lead to harm or injury to yourself or the individual. It can also lead to disciplinary action or even legal action..
