Moving and assisting competency

List tasks relating to moving and assisting that they are not allowed to carry out until they are competent

To ensure the safety of yourself and others, it is important that you do not perform certain tasks until you have received sufficient training and are able to carry them out competently.

Some typical tasks related to moving and assisting that you should be able to prove competency in before performing are:

  • Using assisted beds
  • Using hoists
  • Transference of individuals e.g. from a bed to a chair
  • Personal care e.g. toileting, bathing

When performing these tasks you should always follow your employer’s agreed ways of working.

Attempting to carry out a task that you are not competent in, particularly when it involves moving/assisting another individual can lead to harm or injury to yourself or the individual. It can also lead to disciplinary action or even prosecution.
