When an individual that you support uses assistive technologies, you should ensure that they are fit for purpose, correctly set up and working, and able to be used by the individual.
- Fit for purpose – the assistive technology provides tangible benefits to support an individual’s communication
- Correctly set up – the assistive technology is installed and configured correctly
- Able to be used by the individual – the individual understands and is able to use the assistive technology
When assistive technologies are recommended and supplied by specialist services, the supplier will usually set up the system and ensure that the individual can operate it correctly. However, as the individual’s carer, you may be required to assist with this – for example, you may need to ask questions on behalf of the individual and ensure that they are able to use it.
